Club History

Southbourne Tennis Club was formed in 1965 from the amalgamation of two separate local clubs. The club operates as a non profit making, limited company by guarantee with every full member holding a £1 share in the club. A true club setup for the community.

1925

"23rd Club" Founded
In April, the 23rd Tennis Club opens on Darracott Road. Hiring a court for would cost you 30 guineas!

1926

Moved to Iford Lane (Kiddle’s)
23rd Club relocates to courts near the Old Waterworks Site. Later the the Riverside Club setup opposite.

Post-WWII

Seafield Road Era Begins
23rd Club sets up 4 courts and a pavilion made from a wooden ex-army hut at Seafield Road, behind Carbery Avenue.

1960

Land Sale & Funding Secured
Landlords agree to sell the Seafield site. 23rd receives rent refunds and uses the funds to buy out Riverside’s landlords.

1965

Club Foundation
Southbourne Tennis Club was founded
...by a small group of local tennis enthusiasts. Riverside and 23rd merge to form Southbourne Tennis Club as a non-profit company. Pavilion from 23rd relocated to new site.

1967

First Clubhouse
The original clubhouse was built, providing members with a social hub.

2003

Resurfacing & Floodlights
Courts resurfaced & court floodlights added.

2008

Mini Zone & Clubhouse Refurbishment
Mini Tennis Zone built and clubhouse upgraded with a new kitchen. Further lottery and LTA support.

2010

Strong Community Presence
Club supports a wide demographic from Southbourne and nearby towns, offering standout facilities unmatched locally.

2020

Growth, Maintenance & Accreditation
3 floodlights replaced. Indoor courts considered but too costly. Club works toward Tennis Clubmark and continues to grow its tennis programme and marketing outreach.

2025

Club celebrates six decades of bringing tennis to the community.
