Junior Spotlight: Monty Redman
It’s been a fantastic summer for one of our rising junior stars, Monty Redman! At just 13 years old, Monty has had an outstanding season, climbing to an incredible 29th in the UK Under-14 rankings and picking up numerous tournament wins across the U14–U18 age groups.
A particular highlight was the Nottingham Nationals Grade 1, where Monty won his first two matches to reach the quarter-finals. In what must have been an exhausting encounter, lasting almost four hours, he narrowly missed out on a semi-final place, losing 5–7 in the deciding set to a player ranked in the UK top 10. Monty also had a brilliant run in the doubles, teaming up with his friend Jude to reach the semi-finals. They came so close to making the final, eventually losing out 8–10 in a deciding tie-break.
Sadly, Monty’s summer success was followed by a frustrating setback at the end of September when he sustained an avulsion fracture during the Fred Perry Championships. He had been leading in his semi-final in Middlesex before the injury forced him to retire, and has now been out of action for the past six weeks.
Everyone at Southbourne Tennis Club will be keeping their fingers crossed for Monty’s recovery. He’s had an amazing year, and we hope to see him back out on court, doing what he loves, very soon.
A huge well done, Monty – we’re all incredibly proud of you!
